Should I remove the bio-foam filter replace it with poly-filter that removes
Harmful organics
Toxic ammonia

If you don't keep it changed often it will be a problem. You really shouldn't use a cannister filter. They will absorb waste products and then release nitrates.

I disagree with this statement. If maintained properly a canister filter is a great addition to any tank. I've personally been using them for 35+yrs :) WITHOUT nitrate issues of any kind ;)
To answer the OP's question. You can use pretty much any type of filtration media as long as you keep it cleaned, by rinsing it on a weekly bases :)

I don't think you can wash the poly filter pad. I believe since it absorbs all the bad stuff instead of filtering it out, you have to throw that away. Can be quite expensive, good pad though, it's apparently what they use on submarines to filter drinking water.
