I'm setting up a 30g FOWLR, and have been recommended a canister filter over a HOB power filter by a co-worker

His arguments are larger volume in the canister filter and less noise and no salt creep. The filter media would be carbon, and ceramic rings.

How bad is the noise and salt creep on a HOB filter?

I don't want to splash out too much on a canister if I want to upgrade to reef later. In that case I would probably add a sump.

The other filtration will be a tunze 9001 skimmer

The skimmer is going to be louder then a hob filter. The salt creep isn’t bad on a hob filter. There is some but there will be salt creep on the input output tubes on the canister also.

Go HOB. My buddy got a canister though i told him to go HOB when he first started. Now the canister sits in the garage.

Canisters are a PITA to shut down to clean and restart. He spilled so much water over his floor with that thing.

Thanks for the replies, I will take a look at the HOBs

Aquaclear HOB is good or best HoB out there.
Fluval G3/G6 is good canister, it's easy to clean and mechanical filtration can be clean daily but pretty darn expensive filter!

The aquaclear looks like a good choice, thx for the advice everybody

I just started my tank this past weekend after being absent for 17 years! Going with fake corals and rocks this time around... (have 4 kids now). I went with the HOB so we'll see how it foes
