I have run 125 gallon tank for years w Eheim canisters and Hang on skimmer, Sumps are costly and way overpriced in my opinion. Also if you have one often times cannot upgrade other equipment due to baffle dimensions. KNOWLEGE the key, good Luck!

As you can see many ways to skin a cat. 90g i run a canister been that way for 7 years

Canisters are ok as long as they are cleaned regularly,

Welcome to the fray....or you could do neither cannister or sump. Some say I'm crazy others simple. Wait till I say dump the skimmer too....then I am certifiable! ;) ....enjoy, have fun with it most of all, don't be afraid to experiment. What works for some doesn't for others... That's the journey. Quantifying with mine is a 4 ft 90 gal.
