New to reefing. Is it a good idea to use a cannister filter in addition to a sump with a protein skimmer?
I am interested in the red sea reefer 170 that includes a sump with the tank. Any recommendations as far as including or excluding a cannister filter?

-thanks, Nate

Although it can be done, I'd stay away from canisters. If you don't clean them regularly they become nitrate factory's. If you want to run carbon and the other stuff that's inside the canister, I'd go with something like the BRS reactors in place of the canisters.

I would stay away from the canister filter as well. They're just more of a hassle than anything else. The rock will be you primary biological filter, and if you need to run something like GFO or GAC, an Aquaclear HOB unit would be much easier. GL.

Thanks for the idea, i think i may be leaning towards a reactor instead.
