I have an older cannon 40d and am looking to get a macro lens.

Need some help deciding If I should pay up for the l version with IS or if I should cheap out and get a tarmon

This lens would prob only ever get used for taking picture of my tank

Do those of you with the L lens find the IS to be worth while

IS will be a smaller benefit if you're diligent about using a tripod for your shots. If you're not then it might be worth the extra money. I actually have the L but I justify it because I use it for portraits too :)

What are the focal lengths? I have a 300mm, but it has a 6' focal length.

The minimum focus distance on the 100mm L is .3m (~12"). Not sure about the Tamron but I would assume that it isn't too different. If you use extension tubes you could probably largely negate any difference if there is some.

That's much better than 6'. I think the lens I have is sigma 70mm-300mm. I normally just use the 18mm-55mm that came with the camera though.

you can't go wrong with the quality of the glass in the L series from cannon

I like the L just having a hard time justifying the extra cost when i will mostly be shooting for my reef and everything i have read says to use a tripod
