Hey Everyone, I am fairly new to the hobby. Only in a few months and currently have a JBJ45 RL. When I got it I picked up some cheap second hand pumps and they're really lacking in flow I feel. With a lot of holiday sales happening in the coming weeks I decided I want to upgrade but I do not know what route would be best and most affordable.

I am torn between a single 330 gyre or an MP10 or 40. If I went with the MP's I would only get one for the time being as I think my fiance still wants a christmas gift. I would use my existing pumps to counter the MP flow but they are AC and not adjustable.

I am leaning more toward the gyre but was wondering if anyone with more experience would be able to help me make an ultimate decision.

Thanks in advance!

To be honest, I really don't think it's necessary to buy the most expensive powerheads, but I understand that the controllability is really important to people. I would also probably go with gyre because it gives you a different type of flow to combat with your AC pumps. However, if you run Radions I would go with the Vortech because you could use Reeflink.

I have both & prefer the MP40s because of cleaning the Gyre is more difficult & the MP40 wires are on the outside of the tank.

I have the 1k gyre for my 29gal Biocube and it’s awesome. Great flow for a small tank, but it’s only been running for a few weeks. I haven’t had to clean it yet. I know the magnet is very strong, the controller is simple enough, and it gives an awesome flow pattern within the tank that’s more evenly distributed than a beam from the small Jebao I had running before I upgraded to the gyre.

I have an icecap 3k gyre pump. On a 90gal mix reef. It moves alot of water on standard flow at 40%. When I switch to some of the other flow patterns it tends to get noisy and the wife can hear it so this is why I keep the standard flow. I also like the battery backup from icecap which is a must living in FL. Clean it will take some effort but not that bad.

Good luck with whatever option you choose.

I had gyres for 2 years and I dreaded cleaning it. I finally sold them off and got mp40s. It went from 15-20 min a pump to 5 min a pump.
What a difference on how easy it is to clean.

my buddy got the octo pulse 4 and said its stronger than the mp40s and able to direct them too.

I can’t agree more. If you got the money and that’s what you want to spend, who am I going to judge. I just can’t justify myself spending a few hundred on a pump while I can get one similar for way less. Don’t expect higher price products never fail, they do too!

Are you eventually getting an apex? Or using one now?
The gyre to controller interface requires one module per gyre. Honestly this is why i did not go this direction selecting a power head. Went with tunze instead. This way only need a cable not a whole module to hide for each pump.

In about a week I'll have 5 gyres amongst my tanks, so I kind of like them.
