So I am in the process of building a canopy for my 150g cube with a frag tank attached to one side. I would like easy access to clean the glass on two sides and will not use a mag float. My big question is can I use hydraulics like you would find on a truck tool box to hold the canopy up? Will the salt errode these too bad? Any other suggestions?

Although I've never used them personally, I have seen them used before in build threads. I would imagine they would corrode over time but how long they will last is an unknown.

Do you know of anything else that has been used to lift or pivot a canopy open?

Piano hinges are popular, assuming you have room to "flip" the canopy up and out of the way.
