i bought a tank and stand without canopy but think I am going to get one. Are there any universal canopies that are good? I can get the matching one but it is hard to work out of because of small opening

I did a custom build with a canopy, I used it for a week and i destroyed the thing, seriously. It was a total pain to work around, having to get in and out of the tank all the time was a mess. There are benefits, specifically in regards to your lights and having more options with placement. I ended up with a rimless tank anyways and thus a canopy is pointless, again IMO. You can always bend conduit or use ceiling or wall anchors for your lights, unless you like the look of the canopy, then rock on

You can always build your own. I documented the relatively simple canopy I built HERE, post #23. Minimal woodworking skills and not that much money. What I like about mine is plenty of room with the whole front opening up to get in and out of the tank.

I also did a custom canopy and have been very happy with it (with the exception of a warped door when i wasn't careful....). I liked the idea of doors on the front but I also liked having full access to the top so I made my canopy with cabinet doors and a large piano hinge on the top. This way I have the option of the smaller doors for feeding and can swing the top open for larger maintenance. I also left the back and top open to limit trapping any air or having to install fans.

Both of those look exactly like what I need
