so i purchased 2 skunk shrimp from a "clean" tank. well long story short, 2 weeks after i put them in DT , my mimic tang starts glancing off the sand and rocks. on closer look he has white spots on the 2 front fins, well of course i think ich. my royal gramma did not look too good either, so i decide to quarantine, again, and leave the DT fallow. well i cant find the gramma anywhere, under rocks, i mean anywhere. i assume crabs or something took care of him after he probably perished.

so now that i was going to leave the DT fallow im questioning myself, "could i have missed the gramma?" . so if in my situation, how long would you let the DT sit fallow, add a week or two and go for 3 months total now to be safe? have not seen gramma at all since fish were taken out of DT 2 weeks ago.

now today is day 14 in copper for the fish, the tang has not glanced or rubbed on stuff in the QT, but the white spots are still there on the front fins, none by gills or on body. i use cupramine and seachem copper test kit. the copper levels have been where they should be , if not a smidge on the high side ( test shows at least .5 but prob more like .6 copper level )

i know invertabrates dont have ich, but could have carried into the tank.

anyone have a mimic tang and does it have these white spots on front fins ? could it be im freaking out over something that should be there? the tang did visit the shrimp a lot and get cleaned so maybe he did have something. tang was fine for months before shrimp came into DT. after 2 weeks in the copper the spots should be gone right?

feeling stupid, because i always quarantine everything, the one time i take someones word and .... bam problem.

thanks for any help

will be hard to get a good pic, will try though. may take little while

an update, after checking copper levels again. it was a little low. so i did some thinking and i was using cupramine. well the bottle says add 16 drops for 10.5g of water, then wait 48 hrs and repeat dose. i was going off of the 16 drops for 10.5g of water , not 32 drops total to bring up to level on 10.5g of water, so after 2 or 3 water changes it lowered the copper level. after adjusting cupramine and 5 days at up to proper levels, the tangs front fins seem to be white spot free or darn close to it. so leason learned, just needed to think it through a little more.

Honestly ich can survive a very long time without a host or can even be in a host suppressed and then suddenly come out during periods of stress or water temp fluctuations.

As a general rule you should definitely always quarantine your fish no matter who the source is! I even tell someone who buys a very nice clean crosshatch trigger from me to go ahead and quarantine again. Once a parasite or disease gets into a reef tank it can be a nightmare!

Do you have a UV sterilizer on your tank? If you get one that is strong enough for your tank size you can help combat future breakouts as well.

Thanks,

I would deff run a UV on the display tank for good measure. As to how long it needs to sit fallow, that time really will vary.Id say a couple of months.Good luck!

Fallow period should be a minimum of 9 weeks to ensure all tomonts have excysted.
