So I picked this frag up at petco. Went in there for dog food and walked past the fish section and it was 14 bucks so what the heck right... I have looked on all the major online sales sites and I can't find the exact thing. This is the most open I have ever seen it and when fully closed it looks like some type of brain with small polyps. Thanks for any ideas!!!

Looks like a Flower Pot. Its just not extended at all yet.

It's a gonipora or flower pot coral. It looks a bit bleached. Low light and low flow.

The Flowerpot Coral is often referred to as Daisy Coral, Ball Coral, or Sunflower Coral. All of the flower references are because of its appearance when all of its polyps are opened. It takes on the visage of a bouquet of flowers. It is the rounded or ball-shaped variety and should not be confused with its branching relatives. It is not overly aggressive, but space should still be provided between itself and other neighboring corals. Its polyps can extend far past its base into the reef aquarium, where it can sting other species of corals.

Being a moderately difficult coral to care for and requires moderate lighting combined with moderate water movement within the aquarium. For continued good health, it will also require the addition of calcium, strontium, and other trace elements to the water.

The symbiotic algae zooxanthellae hosted within its body provides the majority of its nutritional requirements from the algae's light driven process of photosynthesis. It will also benefit from additional food in the form of micro-plankton or brine shrimp. Clownfish will often be found in association with the Flowerpot Coral and play in its polyps if no anemone can be found in the reef aquarium.

I've got it under a 4 bulb t5. The bulbs are pretty dang old though. Should I set it down on the sand or leave it up high? I have moved it 2 other times and it seems to like more light. I feel as though I don't possess the skills necessary to care for it. Nor the equipment. I have a sump with some carbon in it and I'm trying to get a handle on some chaeto. But I'm in a small town 3 hours from any real source of marine supply and shipment in the winter has already killed one order of chaeto. I have a hob skimmer which I will upgrade sooner than later but still. The only things I have living in there right now are some snails, hermits, 2 peppermint shrimp, and an Rbta. I made a mistake in buying my first fish before doing research and got something too aggressive so I got rid of it. All water parameters are ok I think; dKh 9.5, Ca 410, Mg 1400, ph 8.1 and the nitrogens are all 0. Thank you guys for the input!

This is my green flowerpot about 2/3 open/extended. When it is closed it looks like yours. When I first got it, it took a couple days to open up this much and about a week to open up fully.
