Can't live without this in reefing..

your second picture with the float valve. is it drilled thru the tank or magnate? where did you get holder?

It is an avast marine probe holder. I have an avast marine pressure switch next to the float switch. The pressure switch let's me know when My 25 gallon ato reservoir runs out.

I’ve left my tank essentially on auto while I was out of the country months at a time. Each time there were lessons to be learned and ways to make things more failsafe. So the magic words are failsafes and redundancies.

1. Huge ATO reservoir which was a large brute trash can. I had someone fill it back up every 2 months.

2. Labeling wires just in case someone needed to unplug something.

3. Camera. I was able to notice a coral had been knocked over onto another. Also peace of mind being able to check on the tank.

4. Auto head cleaner for the skimmer. Collection container for the skimmer with float valve to shut off the skimmer if it became full. Skim dry to reduce amount of skimmate.

5. Max water height float valve in the sump to turn off the ATO and skimmer if triggered.

6. Doser or calcium reactor. When dosing I made sure the containers were large and made premixed ALK, CA, MG for easy refill. Calcium reactor made things a lot easier. I just refilled C02 and media before leaving.

7. Auto feeder. My fishes love new life pellets so that was auto fed 4x each day.

I didn’t worry about water changes. The last thing I needed was someone to mess that up and the tank still thrived without it.

It has been touched on a few times and is on my DIY but float switches for alerts on nearly empty 2 part, ato res, skimmer collection cup... you can buy most of the above with float switches installed or at least the brackets.... then wired to the apex breakout I/o

My ATO is a kitchen-sized trash can with lid that is hooked up to my RODI system. I didn't do it so I can't tell you the details but there is a float valve that opens up flow from the RODI with the reservoir gets low. No more hauling buckets of RODI up from the basement twice a week!

Now if only I could run bigger lines do I could do water changes from the basement, too! But The Husband won't let me drill that big of a hole in the living room floor.

If you're looking for a solid ATO go with the Tunze Osmolator. Can't get any better IMO.

Anyone have a suggestion on a low profile ATO resivour around 10 gallons. I don't need a chiller where I am at and when I get the red sea reefer 450 it has an extra cabinet next to the sump. I had plans to do an out of line refugium in the extra cabinet space so if I could manage a 10gallon resivour in there as well it would be nice. It would have to be something skinny and tall. And I know the red sea comes with an ATO resivour but it is only about 2 to 3 gallons and I have read the float switch isn't the most reliable so I don't plan on using it for ATO anyway.

I use a 15 gallon RV fresh water tank. It's 20"x13"x13", so its low profile. I prefer using a low profile tank (shorter than my sump) with pumped transfer (I use the Neptune PMUP). So long as the discharge into the sump is higher than the tank, ATO cannot siphon into the sump. I recommend redundant control, though, in case of a faulty sensor or float valve.

Here's an old picture from when I was setting this tank up. The ATO reservoir is in the bench to the right of the tank. (Sorry no pic of ATO reservoir - I'm at work. I can upload one later if desired).
