Hi again and season's greetings to all!!
I just became really aware last night that it's impossible to ignore this hobby for long.
I went out to a local bar yesterday, tank temperature was a steady 75°. When I returned maybe 3-4 hours later it had risen to 89° so I unplugged the heater and overnight it dropped back to 81°. So it seems the 9 month old heater thermostat has packed up. The corals didn't seem to like the temperature increase, but are slowly starting to recover.
All the fish are fine, but another couple of hours and they might well have been dinner!!

And this is the exact reason I have a controller.

Soon as I got to 82.5, I would have gotten a text message, and email stating my high heat alarm is going off. My heater would also have been shut off automatically.

Apex has saved my tank more times then I can count. It has certainly paid for itself just in alarm codes.

Even a heater controller(inkbird, honeywell, finnex, etc) would have helped you as it it seems your heater was stuck in the ON position. A simple heater controller would have cut the power to the heater. So even if it was stuck on, the controller would have kept normal temps in the tank.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't heard of a controller before now . I'll make enquiries at the LFS when it reopens tomorrow.

Get one of these there very good and will prevent such problems I have these as primary controllers and then Apex as a final backup
