Just like posted in title, I'm having trouble seeing my coral's colors. Not a system issue, I'm color blind to a certain degree. When blues and purples, browns and green, whites and pinks get close, well, I'm at a 50/50 shot of gwtting the right color. Probaly a good thing I wear a uniform to work! After talking with the wife briefly the other day on what clams see thinks are noce looking compared to what I think, we started a debate amonst each other. We walked into my wet room and started going over the corals, clams, and fish I have in my DT and come to find out I have been picking greens and browns! Not a big issue, but wanted to see if any of you other seasoned reefers have hit on this before. Trying to get my all time favorite sps (a true tri color valida) and ended up getting a local here selling me what I thought was a close second, only to have the wife tell me it only has blue tips and is mostly green. Just thought I'd post my laughing love for this hobby!!!:bigsmile:
Laugh with me or at me, no wories. I am who I am. HA HA. Any thoughts would be great.

I had someone who was partially color blind come over to my house and buy a few frags last year, he said he just buys corals for their texture and growth pattern. Interesting concept as most people just look for color patterns.

If you are happy with your tank, that is all that matters because each tank is the owner's personal work of art.

I'm red/green colorblind, so I can sympathize with you. While I can see the two separate from each other, when they're together, it looks brown. But, according to my wife, my interpretation of green must not be correct. I have a dark green sweater that I love, but I bought it thinking it was brown. I've had some issues with test kits in the past because of this, so having a wife who can see colors well comes in handy (when she's willing). I hadn't considered coral colors, as I'm just setting up my first reef, but lucky for me, most plants are green, so I've not had an issue with my planted tanks in the past.

Thanks. Purple and blue are my worst.

One positive way you could look at this is, the truly expensive corals that have nice color, may look like crap to you when the cheap ugly corals look extremely nice! ;)

Thats one way of looking at it!

LOL. Very true

It's tough. Almost everybody buys corals for their colors and that's almost the only thing people look at it seems. In nature (at least the reefs I have personally visited) you don't always see the colors like we have in our tanks. In fact our tanks are the furthest thing from natural looking as we could get. Growth pattern, animal behavior, and other things are often just as much a factor when it comes to corals for me. I am a sucker for wicked colors though! If the tank makes you happy that's all that really matters in the end, you are the one putting in the blood so do what puts a smile on your face, otherwise it's not really worth it.

I think that if I was color blind I would save a lot of money on coral and fish.

I was thinking that too, but after a black longnose, chevron, and 2 high end picasso clowns..... I'm thinking I am still sending plenty of $$$ out. LOL. Not that I'm wishing I didn't. I love those fish too much now, even though the 2 tangs will be both black as adults.

Just keeping everyone up to speed, I love my tank, but want that show piece that "maybe" would be enough for a spotlight tank, or a "wow" factor. This all started as I'm trying to get a color balance for my 240 and know which way I'm going with it. At first, fish were the thought to make the color (such as anthias or wrasses), but corals were an easier look and a growing passion. Now trying not to buy all blue, or all green!!

I'm with you buddy, I'm colorblind myself. Some brown looks green to me and I can't see orange especially the digitatas. Whenever I look for blue clams they all look purple so right off the bat I tell the salesperson that I'm colorblind and to please be honest with me haha:)

Yeah, I have started laughing when a LFS person ask me to pick which one I think looks (as for color) the best. :xd:

I am partially color blind also. red-green-blue.
I still see colors of course but have issues to say what color a particular coral has as I mess them up.
Kinda embarrassing when you tell somebody how much you like the reds on a particular piece and they look at you saying there is no red at all and it is purple btw.

Yeah, and for some reason the ones I picked which I think really looks good its not to them:wink: oh well. I still enjoy this hobby a lot regardless of my handicap lol:bigsmile:

Yep, as long as it appears nice to us, nothing else matters.
