CarboCalcium powder by Tropic marin

I wanted to add this to my topoff water.

I currently have a 93gal tank , medium stock of SPS and LPS.

It evaporates about 5 gallons a week.

I wanted to work out the numbers to where i could just add a scoop or whatever to a 5 gal bucket of RO water and basically use it as a calcium reactor for the ALK and CA

It might work. I'd personally look at using limewater instead for that plan. I've been using kalk in my ATO for 2 years, and it's super easy.

I'd definitely recommend reading through this thread about Carbo-Calcium before dosing it like Kalkwasser. This is calcium formate (not calcium hydroxide) and has different properties and dosing instructions.

Thanks for chiming in @randyBRS. Did you find this thread while researching for a new BRS TV Product Spotlight? I've been hoping to have some Spotlight episodes on the new Tropic Marin products BRS started stocking.

@reefnut I would personally not use this product the way you describe. I don't personally even like delivering calcium hydroxide in an ATO. I feel like kalkwasser has a bit of a bad reputation in the hobby for being hard to control or dangerous because of the potential for overdose. I'm convinced we would feel the same way about sodium carbonate/bicarbonate if we dosed it through our ATOs.

ATOs are really great at keeping water levels stable. They're not so great at operating without failure indefinitely, nor are they great at dispensing the same amount of freshwater every day at the exact same time of day. For these reasons, I would personally not dose any calcium or alkalinity supplement in an ATO. That includes calcium hydroxide. I dose my limewater with a dosing pump.
