Recently I read an article which made some attributions to carbon being a possible contributor to lateral line erosion in certain fish, including tangs. I have had this problem with my yellow tang. He is getting better slowly with better feeding, buy I also removed the chemi pure elite in the sump. Now I'm not sure if chemipure elite is carbon? I think it is...?
Anyone else know anything about this? That's all
Thanks

In a study at the Toledo Zoo, it was shown that the use of unwashed, lignite GAC, caused HLLE. Lignite is a form of GAC made from coal. I have been using GAC in my systems for over 30 years, and have never had a problem. Although I don't buy the cheapest product, and always rinse it before use.

Here is some articles:

I lost three tangs to LLE while I was running carbon within a 5 month period.. Since I'v removed the carbon I havn't lost a single tang, looks healthier than ever.

I know this topic is discussed passionately both ways. I have personally never had a problem running carbon in my system, but I always rinse the GAC well before putting it online. I think the quality of the carbon and the rinsing practices of the user have a big impact on this topic. Just my $.02.

I know that chemipure claims their carbon won't leach into the water, but there doesn't seem to be a way to test. I'll just continue to leave it out and monitor my tang.
Thanks for the responses and links guys
