Higher alk in a low nutrient environment may cause faster skeletal than tissue growth. Sometimes this manifests in paler corals or parts of the new growth that are effectively bleached.
Carbon dosing is good at lowering nitrates, if your corals dont have another source of nitrogen it could potentially cause issues. I’m not sure that this is always true though. I wouldn’t think that keeping alk at 9.5 vs. 8 in a low nutrient tank would cause such big issues...I could be wrong but this area is based on observations more than settled science.
In general when carbon dosing you should be careful to register some nitrates using a test kit.
