Carbon dosing

Following along. I don't see how it would accomplish much without some way to export the bacteria/nitrate. When I changed to a better (bigger) skimmer my carbon dosing became much more effective.

I'm sure some one with more knowledge will weigh in.

I don't know the science behind it but I do all research I did on carbon dosing no matter the type not only tells u to run a skimmer but to run an oversized skimmer.

For carbon dosing to work, you need a skimmer. The "carbon" is food for bacteria. The bacteria flourish, and in the process consume nitrates and phosphates. You now need a means to get all this excess bacteria out of your system along with those nasty nitrates and phosphates. And that's where the skimmer comes in. The skimmer is your "export" device

Without the skimmer, the bacteria will die within your tank, returning the phosphates and nitrates back into the water.

Always heard a skimmer is a must while carbon dosing. Just wanted to see everyone's thoughts.
I've been running my tank for 3 years or so skimmerless. Always had prolem getting any sort of nitrate readings.
I quit testin regularly because never had a reading. I did test couple months ago and to my suprise had a reading.
Read Sea kit showed 16ppm.
It's not terribly high and corals have been looking better. Have no intentions of dosing at this time and will be testing regularly too see if nitrates continue to rise or not.
