Not to nit pick but shouldn't that be nitrifying bacteria?
Not even. Nitrifying bacteria doesn’t consume carbon, it consumes ammonia.

Heterotrophic bacteria is the correct term.
 
Opps. I fixed it
I could be wrong....I often am, but as I understand it nitrifying is converting ammonia to nitrites/nitrates, and then denitrifying converts nitrate to nitrogen gas. So the one that consumes nitrates (and I assume phosphates) is denitrifying.
