How long does a bag of activate carbon last in my sump.. lets say a 1/4 lb bag

It’s not really based on weight, but you should be using the appropriate amount. Most ppl change it once a month.

The color test is the best way to check carbon. Compare tank water (in a white bucket) with fresh rodi water (also in a white bucket). As the carbon depletes your water "yellows." Do weekly checks until you will begin to hone in on when you need to change your 1/4lb bag.
