This question probably gets asked a lot, and i was wondering lately, since i have 1 3-4” toadtool, and a tiny toadstool as well. My tank is 4 months old lps dominant tank mostly. Should i add carbon or not? For the chemical warfare from the toadstool? I have tangs. Mostly worried about HLLE.

I always run carbon, i have a gem and a hippo and neither have signs of HLLE... But i also fortify their food with vitamins and change their diet every week.

As long as you get some good quality pellet carbon and rinse it good, and ensure it does not tumble in a reactor (if you plan on using one)

It should be fine!

Is carbon necessary though? Thats the question.

If you do large water changes regularly then no. But if you're like the rest of us and you're lucky to do a 10% a week then carbon would be the safe bet

I think that you would be hard pressed to find any evidence that organic toxins stick around long in our tanks. Not only do organics break down, but protein skimmers and other things remove them.

Water clarity, organic removal are good reasons to use GAC.

So no reason for carbon? what's GAC?

I kinda always run it sometimes but I find i like purigen better

No, it's not. At one time I had a lot of leathers in my old tank and I never ran carbon. I'd say don't use it until/unless you see a problem, or possibly for short periods after making a toadstool/leather angry (fragging, etc)
