So I've been told I want to add a carbon reactor to my system by multiple LFS. What do they do? I'm already throwing socks of the stuff in my sump is that not good enough? I'm just trying to figure out if it's actual good idea or they're just selling me on a piece of equipment for the sack of here's a shiny new toy.

What problem are you trying to solve?

Carbon is more effective in a reactor than in a bag, but that doesn't mean you need one.

yellow tint in my water when the lights are off and smell.
Yup - carbon reactor will polish the water and take away the yellow tint. +/- smell, depends on the source. They are relatively inexpensive. Most affordable is prob the BRS reactor or BRS mini for your sized tank. Use a quality carbon that wont just disintegrate and dust on you.
Honestly - GAC in a bag in a high flow area may work just as well. The reactor is nice to have on hand for max efficiency and can be interchanged with GFO if you need.
