If you are carbon dosing , is it necessary to run activated carbon ?

Don't confuse carbon dosing with activated carbon...two totally different things. Carbon dosing provides a food source for bacteria to grow and flourish, while activated carbon absorbs/removes organic compounds for the water column. So yes, no problem doing both at the same time.

Well let me ask this , do nitrates cause yellow pigment in water ?

I've never associated nitrates to yellow water....and I have always struggled with high nitrates....no yellow water.

Not sure what you're getting at, but do you have yellow water? And if you're running carbon, do you first rinse the activated carbon before putting it in your tank? I've seen "yellow" water before where running carbon had helped clean it up. A friend wasn't doing water changes because he was utilizing the NatuReef system, and his water was pretty yellow. Activated carbon cleared this up.

I was just wondering if nitrates played any role in yellow water , i do have a slight tint so I'll run some carbon and see it clears up

Yeah activated carbon will clear the water and take out any smell the tank might have. I use BRS rox carbon in a filter bag in my sump. Tried the reactor method but it was too much of a pain. Easier to just out some in a bag rinse it and throw it in the sump for me.
