Carbon

Activated carbon has 2 main uses in a reef tank:
1) Clear our toxins that may be released from soft corals
2) Polish the water and make it clearer

Since you have a fish only tank, the only reason you'd want to use them is to clear up your water. So no, you dont NEED carbon by any means but if you think your water is yellowish/cloudy/not so clear then you can try carbon.

I personally would run GAC from time to time anyway. Just to be on the safe side. There's no telling what household contaminates that might be making their way into the tank through air exchange. The way I see it, if you can smell dinner cooking, there's something getting into the tank that we can't test for.

Just the way I see it.

Agreed. No harm in running a bag of carbon and changing it monthly. Might prevent issues from happening later on.
