Is anyone using that Hawaii black substrate? Im thinking about using it. looks pretty cool but would it be safe for soft belly's, sand sifting gobies, stars and snails? I see it says the grains range from .25 - 3.5 mm not sure exactly how big that is. I love the way Gobbies swim around gulping sand and spitting it out. would they be able to do that with this substrate?

I thought I would throw this out there, but does being black effect anything like reflect or absorb light, fish, corals not like it any issues other than being different color.

The only issue I have with it is the same issue I have with a black car. Every bit of detritus sticks out like a sore thumb. Coincidentally it does just as good of a job helping your corals stand out. So its kind of a give and take.

I am looking into the same sand and have decided to go with the Hawaii black over the tahitian moon. The tahitian moon is slightly magnetic which could get caught in your magfloat and scratch the glass.

WOW. I did have some substrate in my freshwater that was high in iron! Scratched the crap out of my glass!

So just looking for opinions. How would black substrate look in an oak trim tank? Does anyone have pics?
I was thinking about getting a black trim tank but was able to save my old one.

Joining in here. I just got this for my 20g I'm setting it up later this week and I'll post some pics.
Any one else have pics with black sand?

I still haven't set mine up. (Been slacking with my build) But I read somewhere that the black was also magnetic and it can get into pumps and score the magnets.

It depends on the sand. I have the Hawaiian black in my reef and the Tahitian moon in my FOWLR. I routinely run my mag float all the way down to the substrate, even push the substrate out of the way with it. They are both non-magnetic.
