It's quite common, unfortunately. Even systems that are created specifically for these NPS often have difficulty keeping them in good health long-term (let alone having them grow and reproduce).

From all I've read over the decades, the best chance of success in a typical reef aquarium would be with a very mature thriving system (at least a few years old) that has lots of smaller organisms regularly reproducing as well as regular feedings plus frequent detritus stirring.
 
it has become very long. A single arm of it lives on in my display and ive mooved the main colony into a filter sock as a last ditch attempt
