Barely.

I arrive at home and go check on my tank. I immediately notice something is wrong. The water level is very high in my DT, and the level in my sump is normal. The water flow going down the return line sound different. I was soon going to have water overflowing the sides of the DT! :rain:

I turned off the ATO and siphoned some water out of my sump and then shut down the return pump. After the water stopped flowing I pulled the Durso stand pipe out of the overflow to look for a restriction. Nothing. I look down into the bulkhead and there it is, a big *** nerite snail blocking my 1" return line!

Luckily I have a silicone return line going from the bulkhead to the sump. I pulled off the line, but the booger was jammed in the bulkhead. I had to break it up with a screwdriver to get it out. Thank God I got home when I did.

By the way, nerite snails are friggin useless. I'm surprised John over at Reef Cleaners sells them. I dumped about 15 of them in my tank 2 months ago as part of my CUC. The boogers all went and hid in one corner of the tank and would stay there for days on end. Then if they did move, they crawled right out of my tank and ended up on the floor. I eventually put most of them in my sump. No more nerite snails for me.

Isn't that funny how when you walk in the door after a day at work and the first thing you notice is something wrong in your tank?
I've done it a few times myself.

What makes me mad is my wife can be there all day long and not notice something going wrong.

Yes, I do agree with you on the nerite snails.
They manage to crawl up over my eurobraced tank, then flop on the floor and dry up.
I think I may have 25-30 left in my tank that hang out up in the corners, no matter how many times I move them back onto my live rock.

They can stay alive for days after dropping out of a tank. Smell him next time. If it smells really bad, ya he's a goner! They will seal them selfs in the shell and live for couple of days

It's funny. Every morning my 5 year old twins would run downstairs to see how many snails they could pick up and toss back in the tank for me. The snails were always fine, and crawled back out after a couple days. It's like a pod of whales beaching themselves.

Thing is, now that they are in the sump they aren't crawling out of it. Maybe the DT was too clean?

Lol reminds me of the time I came home to a turbo snail that thought he would be helpful and clean my return nozzle for me.... He sent water everywhere.

A word on strainers: They are the same size as the pipe you are using. So this means you can't use them on a bare pipe. You need a coupling or any fitting. In your case, since you have dursos, the 90° on the end you should be okay.

I remember one time I forgot my RODI was running. Let's just say, thankfully my tanks are in the basement, over a concrete floor.

Happened to me a couple of times and I have tenants in my basement :(
Wow, the mess and destruction.

Just need to install a float valve before using is the best way to avoid it. Learned my lesson! Float valve=$15, no float=cost me $3000

Ya I got one with my ro/di but I put it on to my blue 65g barrel for curing saltwater but didn't have one for the same barrel for just top offs :(
