Club member lost a yellow tang to day. Markings where on one side. He has had the fish for a long time
Notice the spot last night. But was worse this morning.
No new fish or other additions

Looks like a bacterial infection. Maybe from a wound? Odd looking fins. Was the fish bullied?

This fish showed symptoms one day and it was dead the next? That sounds like a gram negative infection. Difficult to treat sometimes, especially if you arn't prepared to treat immediately. Even then, it can be hard to cure.

Agree with bacterial infection diagnosis, the dark area is blood pooling under the skin. Because harmful bacteria are always present in the water (like germs in the air), they can strike a fish at any time. An open cut and/or compromised immune system is all it takes. The latter is why fish with ich, velvet, brook, etc. so frequently succumb to infection as their immune system is already tied up fighting the parasite.

Thanks it looked like a wound of some sort. Tangs can injure themselves by their jumpy behavior.
