CB Beast Mode Acro

It's all opinion, just like why some people find certain painting worth thousands vs some worth a couple of dollars, even when they were both made with the same materials. :)

I think it's pretty hard to compare coral to any other tangible man made object such as cars, watches, paintings. Those things can truly be limited in numbers or the painter could be long gone and never painting again. Where as these corals are living and growing exponentially.

But I understand if I had a multi-million dollar annual income, "who cares about the price tag."

totally understandable. But I've found trying to compare paintings to corals the easiest comparison, since just like paintings some corals are also limited as well. I like to see our reefs as living art, and the way one person enjoys a reef is completely different to how someone else might. Cars, watches, etc are priced the way they are because the parts used to make them are pricey, thus the price. But whether or not someone is willing to pay for a painting is mostly based on opinion. It's in no way the perfect comparison, but it's a close enough one at least for most people that I talk to.

People with more money than sense that would pay for it.

Even if I had unlimited money I personally would feel like I was being robbed by paying that price. The wholesale colony would cost a few hundred for an entire colony if that much.
What exactly dictates what a coral is "worth"?

When you put it that way I can agree art would be one of the best comparison methods.

Whole salers definitely know what they have and charge a lot more for the better looking stuff, I see the lists every week :)

+1 good old days are gone. There's more people making money in beginning now than before when just the last seller was making cash.

Our hobby's evolved to become very complicated. I can't think of another hobby like ours where livestock/ things found in the wild are given price values based solely on opinion. It's not like fish where the cost of collection and availability dictate the price. But at least the hobby is growing everyday!

I like to think that some of these vendors are pricing themselfs right out of the game and that at some point they will have a tank full of corals and no one buying from them. There are a few vendors that I have bought from, as little as 1 1/2 years ago, acro frags packs on their sites were in the $400 to $600 range, every once in awhile maybe a $800 pack and individual Acro frags cost $50 to $100 per frag. I go to their web sites today, frag pack sell for $2000 and up, all of the individual frags are all pushing $200 each. imo Just not a lot of people out there that are going to be paying these type of prices and that a lot of these vendors are all competing for that smaller upper end corals buyer. I think this type of a business model will run you right out of the game. But :) I could be wrong and these vendors will all end up being multi millionaires.

I don't get what's makes it so expensive. I'm not trying to hate, but I just really don't get it. He describes it as blue branches, but don't mostly all acros have blue branches under intense blue led's?!? I mean under more 'daylight' lights, it's red colored branches...so...I don't get it.

The problem is that there is always somebody out there willing to pay the price for these over priced corals. Another problem, these sellers have their followers and they will pay an outrageous price just because the seller put their name on the piece when they could of got the same coral from a different vendor for way cheaper.

It's nice the only frag I've seen that I thought was worth more then $50-$100 which is my price limit was the jaw dropper and still way out my price range if it ever gets in the 2-300$ range for a healed frag ill snag one !

Great question and I think it is quite often misunderstood. The only value here is what a buyer is willing to pay. People constantly state, one coral is not "worth" X amount of dollars. Just read into statement that to that person they would never pay that much. The next guy might step up and pay X amount because he valued the coral more and was willing to chalk up the money for it. In the end, it is the buyer dictating worth at that specific transaction.

This makes sense to me as I don't get the jawdropper price either. I mean the current morph of the JD looks nothing like the original when it first came out. The pics and videos of the original looked unreal. I mean don't get me wrong, what it morphed into looks nice, but it is no way close to a $1000 for a bugger frag. There are so many other acros out there that look way better...but that's just me.

I don't get it. Why is this a problem? If everyone were charging more than what you consider to be a fair price, then THAT would be a problem. However, since there are vendors which sell corals at premium prices AND vendors that don't, why is it an issue that people spend their money where they choose to? I've always liked that this hobby allows for people to share it from the very budget conscious all the way to the extreme collectors. Some people like to collect corals from specific vendors and specific lineage while others couldn't care less about what a coral is called or who sells it. Some people like to grow things out from small frags, while others like to stock their tank with colonies. Is it really a problem that everyone can enjoy the hobby in their own way?

These guys are out of control with the prices I mean I guess sure if people are willing to pay it then power to you that's what makes this country what it is. Take a look at open fisherman boats, nothing but a fiberglass hull and big motors there is no real dollar value yet they fetch almost as much money as a yacht which includes all sorts of goodies like full showers bathrooms A/C, televisions and much more. I have seen the Collector mentioned in this thread take a coral listed on R2R for $250 put his name on it and list it on eBay for $999....and apparently people are buying/bidding must be nice to be able to extort the heck out of hobbyist....then again no different than many other businesses do.
