Any success on here with adding a copper band butterfly to a yellow tang?

I just put in a CBB a week ago with a Yellow in a 34G non-medicated quarantine tank. There was aggression from the yellow for 3 days or so. But I had a open top acclimation box that the CBB can get into to get some relief. There was no chasing, just aggressive swimming towards the CBB and stopped to let the CBB know who has that territory.

After the 3 days, the CBB was eating normal. I am looking to put both into the display after I rehome the purple tang. If I put these 2 in the Red Sea Reefer 525XL with the purple, they both would get bullied. Good luck.

Also done it in my 90g. Initially some aggression, but set a mirror up to keep the yellow guy busy at times and over time it went away (3 days or so). Now they are best buddies. CBB and Tang been in tank for ~1year now. CBB only eats mysis

Did you guys avoid a certain size or does it matter?

Yes just did it two weeks ago. Added a smaller cbb to a tank with a well established yellow Tang. No issues at all but the size of your tank will impact that perhaps? Mine is a 180.

CBB does not bother the Yellow tang, but can hold it own against mild aggression of the Yellow tang. You should have no problem unless your tank is very small. What tank size and how big are the fishes?

75 gallon 3” yellow tang

I have a copper band in a tank with a Harlequin tusk, 2 yellow tangs (that are the same size as the CBB) a larger purple tank a blue lined dotty back, a clown and a file fish. There are plenty of hiding places, and the copper band actively fights the other fish for food. The tangs and CBB are bout 3-4 inches (body size)

I think a 75 gal tank is a tad small for the yellow tang. My CBB don’t grow much even if they eat a lot and are fat. After 3 years they are only 3.5 inches, and fat in a 320 DT.
accodingly I don’t think the CBB will outgrow the 75 gal tank but the yellow tang will.

Its interesting, CBB's are supposed to grow to 8 inches. Yellow tangs, though they grow 'big' - they do not do so quickly. They - as do several other reef fish - seem to have a growth spurt - then slowly grow to the 'maximum' size we always see quoted. For example Yellow tangs have a growth spurt over the first 2-3 years of life - and then slowly grow to the age of 30-40 years in the wild. But - as far as outgrowing I would suggest that either has a chance (likelyhood) of outgrowing a 75 gallon tank. Hopefully the OP will upgrade:)

Actually you kinda did, it's completely relevant to your question.
I’m asking if a yellow tang and CBB will get along. If you think that them being closer because of tank size will trigger more aggression, I can say I agree. On the other hand I’ve had a yellow tang for 6 years in this tank so if you want to be a tang police find a diff thread

Why ask opinions if just upset when not getting the answer you want?
