CDNess's 125G Build Thread

Updates:

Here is a current but crappy FTS:

I met Tony Vargas last weekend at the SFAAS event in Sioux Falls SD. It was a great time and heard some wonderful information during his presentations.

I also received some corals from SFAAS members as well as the Sertoma Butterfly House and Purdy Marine Cove (Pictures to come on these). They are a non-profit public aquarium and butterfly flight room in Sioux Falls. If anyone is ever in the area it is a wonderful place to go see.

I have a new 40 breeder to use as a sump which will allow my to have more room for a larger ATO reservoir as well as finally install the calcium reactor. The 75 has to go due to the height of the tank and the inability to easily remove the skimmer cup for cleaning. It is causing me to slack and I don't like it when I slack on maintenance...

So I won a Hanna Checker for Phosphate at the SFAAS meeting with Tony Vargas. I checked my tank last night and it read 0.10 which isn't good so I guess back to some GFO. I was wondering where the stunted growth was coming from and I guess this answers my question. Titration tests always came out to 0 so I didn't think it was an issue.

Also I added Bio-Pellets to the system. I was going to use the BRS reactor, but Bob had an extra JNS Alpha 1 reactor and it works really well. I started with 1/4 cup and a few days ago I added another 1/4 cup to slowly ease into them. So far there has been better polyp extension on my corals and the cyano has started to receed a bit.

Long time no update over here...

Well I killed my 3 starfish with biopellets. The water became too clean and the bio-film was no longer available for them to eat and they all starved to death. My daughter was devastated for a night but quickly got over it. I will be taking the pellets offline slowly.

I also built a new sump out of a 40 breeder. There were a few reasons to do this to replace my 75G sump. The largest one was convenience. It was harder than heck to take out the skimmer cup for cleaning. It was also impossible to remove the skimmer without taking out the whole 75G sump so it hasn't been cleaned in a good year and a half. Also I wanted to have room for a larger ATO reservoir as well as my calcium reactor equipment at some point in the future. The 75G took up too much room.

I took some pics along the build process and the completed setup under the stand:

As you can see there is enough space for a 10G ATO on the right side now and enough extra room for the calcium reactor setup to go on the left side.

I am getting used to having much less in-sump room than I had before. I had to kill a couple rocks as they were just too big to fit into the sump. I need to move the bio-pellet reactor to the return section and slowly take it offline. It is currently turned off as the water level was too low and it splashed too much, however it needs to come back on for a bit so I can ease the tank off the bio-pellet system.

I cleaned my glass last night ;) However I was more concerned with the boat getting into the yard after dark so I didn't pay much attention to the tank.

RODI unit is getting fired up later today to make some top-off water then again later to get the amount needed for a full water change on the QT tank. The purple Tang's tank needs a full run through and cleaning so I am draining and scrubbing the tank this week.

On the 125 there will be a 20G water change sometime this week. I also need to siphon out some of the cyano that is still there. I am hoping it won't come back... Then I will add a little more sand to some areas that are low from the siphoning.

This weekend I am hoping to get the new 10G ATO reservoir set up and the old one removed. This will allow room for the Calcium Reactor to be placed. I will also be regenerating more DI resin on Sunday so I can replace the resin in my RODI again. High CO2 in the water is not fun for DI resin usage...

Maybe this weekend I can post some pictures in my build threads!

Had a club meeting at Oceans Paradise in Bismark ND last weekend. Added a GBTA, Coral Beauty, Montipora Setosa, and Forest Fire Digitata...

Pics to come.

I will be setting up the calcium reactor soon. The calcium and alkalinity usage from the dosers is getting a bit crazy at almost 100 ml each per day. Time to lower that usage and get into the reactor instead.

Love the angel man, she's a beauty. I've debated switching to a reactor too, I'm going through about that much plus kalk. Let me know if you like it better.

Thanks for all the compliments! It has come a long way but still has some room for improvement.

I have a few things that need to be done to get rid of the cyano that covers the back wall. Also I need to figure out what killed my clam so I can attempt another one. I love the no explanation issues where there is no definitive answer... :(

The weekend has come and gone and half way through the week already... Where does all the time go?

So I am not any further on the installation of the calcium reactor... I have not switched my ATO system over to the new 10G tank... I have not built the CO2 Scrubber either... Man am I ever a slacker.

I however have bartered a deal on a working sea swirl and two non-working units which I will be picking up on Sunday. This will help randomize the flow a bit better in my powerheadless design. I have been waiting for a good barter deal for awhile and finally got it all set up. I believe I can get a second one repaired from the included parts, but we'll see what happens with them.

I will try take some pictures this weekend, however I have said that before and never got around to it. I guess wait and see what I can come up with!
