Centropyge aurantia

It's usually pretty tough to determine sex in fish like these. Color is the same or very close to the same for male and female. Usually the easiest way to tell is by size. The male is normally larger than the females. Like all centropyge they are all born female and the more dominant one becomes the male. If you're asking to try and pair them up your best bet is to get one large and one small.

I have one now. I've had it for like three years actually. A LFS just got a very small one in and I would like to pair them up. I know it's not that easy, which is why I was asking first.

Yea it's really hit or miss trying to pair centropyge. If you really want to try I would suggest using an acclimation box as opposed to just letting the new one into the tank. Good luck

Everything @kschweer said is 100% accurate. There is no easily discernable features other thans size.

Getting one significantly smaller and added via an acclimation box is your best bet, but even then there could be aggression were it won't work out.

I have a "pair" of them. I bought them together. One is slightly smaller than the other. I have only had this "pair" for a month or so. (I bought them at the same time but they were not bonded prior to purchase that's why pair is in quotes). They never showed an ounce of aggression towards one another, strangely. I've only had a few over the years but I've never noticed them to be particularly aggressive but I've also had them with larger and more aggressive centropyge, other Angels, tangs, etc.

I'm really fond of flameback Angels they're full of personality and pretty neat looking. I find them to be pretty hardy, also.

Golden? I do not have one. I wish I did!

Hahahaha wrong scientific name. I confused it with flameback. Yeah I know nothing about golden except that they're very cryptic and not as hardy as other centropyge. Sorry for being an idiot! :D

(This is why I hate scientific names)

centropyge aurantia
centropyge acanthops.

Ok it's been a long day. It's Monday. :D

Ahh...so you don't have a pair then?
I do not. I don't have any of them. I like them but everyone I know that has had one long term says they never see it. As beautiful as they are I fear that would be what happens to me.

I always here that. I guess I got lucky because mine is always out and about. Yeah, it sticks to the rocks, but he's never hiding.

The ones I have had dealings with are definitely more cryptic than other dwarves, but they generally remain visible in a tank.

It depends on how highly you value having a pr. Personally, I would be content with a single golen angel and save the bioload for a different fish.

Good point. My tank is way big enough to support the bioload, BUT I remember now, when I lived in an apartment, I had two IM 40 gallon set ups. I had the golden in one and in the other I bought a potters. The clowns I had with the potters destroyed the potters, so I moved him over with the Golden. The golden finished him off pretty quick.
