Ceramic media balls yes or no?

If you do use them how do you maintain them? Any drawbacks? I have 220 gal mixed reef with 39 inch Trigger sump.

I had 3 liters of ehiem substrate pro in a mesh bag in my sump for over a year.
You can take them out and rinse in tank water to clean.
I removed them from my 120 after about 18 months with no effect on the system.

If I remove them, should I increase my protein skimming? Thanks.

Good question and following along as I have thought about this as I design my build. To many posts about metals leaching out of the bio blocks wondering how folks are using the ceramic balls or other and if any negative impacts.

If you have enough rock work and no nutrient issues they are pointless.
