This is just me thinking out loud but couldn't ceramic rings be used in place of live rock? It seems to me they would do the exact same job. I would never put them in a display tank but you could load your sump up with them. Am I thinking right about this? Thanks Dale

There Has been hundreds of people use these including, A product called Matrix, and ive even seen lava rock used. Im sure they all work as a biological filtration but without maintenace to this stuff it can harbor detritus.

Yep, works greats. I keep little 'pond baskets' full of LR rubble (could use ceramic rings) in my sump. Once a week I shake the crap out of them to release mulm and detritus which is then eaten by coral or removed by filter sock and skimmer. I use LR rubble over ceramic as already had a bunch of extra LR and a hammer ;)

Don't use lava rock as it has a high amount of Phosphates bound into the rock that can leach back into your water.
