Cerium Oxide not cutting it when trying to remove scratches

So I got a great deal on a 125 gallon tank. Built a custom stand for it.
Now that the excitement is dying down, I noticed how bad the. scratches are in the glass.
I've been hitting it with a felt wheel and cerium oxide, but I'm not seeing any effect.
Can I hit it with a wet sand using 3000 grit or higher without causing more damage?

what sort of tool are you using? I have been able to remove scratches from steel wool with cerium oxide with a foam pad and a random orbit polisher. You could realistically use whatever grain sandpaper you want to remove glass until the scratches are level with the surface, but you'll have to take care to go slowly and then also a final polish..
