I routinely pull basketball sizes of chaeto out of my refugium. It's allowed me to remove GFO and use the chaeto as my primary source of nutrient export (paired with an ATB skimmer). This sort of K.I.S.S. system has worked extremely well for me.
Just recently I used (very effectively!) a dose of fluconazole to remove some pesky bryopsis. In the process though, my massive chunk of chaeto stopped growing, and eventually (after some stagnant weeks) started dying.
A couple water changes and a fresh batch of chaeto later, and I got to thinking: I'm assuming my phosphate/nitrate are more elevated than normal right now. As my chaeto gets revved up and going again, will it have the ability to actually reduce? Or should I re-add the GFO to get my phosphate down to a number reachable for chaeto alone to manage?

at a ratio of 30:1. I see no reason to use GFO. If anything, use GAC.
