Chaeto causing problem.

Has anyone had a problem with small pieces of chaeto breaking off and clogging pumps? I haven't changed anything. I have a small area sectioned off in my sump for the refugium. It is in the same section as my skimmer. Lately my skimmer stops making bubbles and when I take it a part the chaeto has clogged the impellor. This is a completely new problem in the last couple of weeks. Any ideas how to stop this from happening? My refugium is made out of egg crate. If I covered the refugium with cheese cloth, would that work? Thanks for any problem solving ideas you may have.

I found that circular foam tubes (available for HOB overflows) works great keeping chaeto out of skimmer intakes. For that matter any filter foam over skimmer intake will stop chaeto for plugging up your skimmer. BUT it's one more item on your maintenance list to clean, Just sayin'..
