juat added a Fuge to my 32 bio. Put in 2 cups of Chaeto and have the innovative marine Chaeto max 2 for the light. It’s been about 2weeks. I checked on it today and I have either mushy Chaeto or hair algea growing on the Chaeto and now there is about 1/2 cup of algea left..... Any ideas.

Three things pop up with me.....

1. What's your nutrient levels/water pramameters?

2. Light intensity/spectrum off.

3. Flow through the chaetomorpha section. Do you turn the chaeto from time to time?

Parameters seam ok.. all within most people’s recommend ranges. Mag 1400, cal 390. Alk 8.1. Ph 7.8, ammonia 0 nitrates 3ppm nitrites 0, salinity 1.025. Tem fluctuates between 79.5and 80
The light is directly on the glasss lighting up the Fuge area.
Didn’t tturn Chaeto as their was so much room it was floating around. The Fuge is the intank Refugium for the biocube 32

Welcome to R2R!

What are your phosphates and how long do you leave the chaeto light on for?

I have one of those in my IM 30 and it grows chaeto very well but it is very dense and the side facing the light can get bleached/mushy so I have to rip it up and toss a little every week.

I 'think" there's not sufficient nutrients to feed the Chaeto. The Ha is sucking up what nutrients there are are before the chaeto can use it .
This happened to me. I started dose a "little" nutrients the chaeto took off & the Ha just disappeared.
We need current Nitrate & phosphates
. welcome to R2 R great place for learning . we will help You solve this issue .

Nitrate is 3ppm. Need to get a phosphate test kit. I’m assuming there is enough nutrients as I have to clean the glass on a daily basis from green surface alge. No hair algea.
Now I did add Calcium to that area instead of the return chamber and I have added my RO water to that chamber as well. Might that have caused the Chaeto to crash??

Hi and Welcome to R2R. The guys and gals who post on here know what they are talking about, so they will help figure out what is going on. I’m suspecting not enough food for the chaeto... but let the pros tell you what is going on!

The chaeto max did not work well for me. Chaeto did not grow well and eventually killed it by dropping po4 too low. Also had a lot of slime and hair algae growth as well.

I replaced the chaeto max with an h80 and added a quart of chaeto. Within a month my entire fuge is packed full of chaeto and no nuisance algae in the fuge

I actually have 2 softball size of it in a tub outside with my rocks. No heater or powerhead. First one has been in there for a month now and second about 2 weeks. They're not growing but they still look exactly like when I tossed them in there. Some people just cant seem to grow them no matter what while others can't get rid of them fast enough.

I'm guessing your nutrients are low as well. I checked out the spectrum of that light and that should work.

I started growing a similar amount of chaeto under a 9 watt grow bulb a month ago and it has easily doubled in size. My phos is high 2ppm, nitrates 20ppm. I just boosted my lights up to 16 hours.

Check your phosphates first. You could also try reducing your light cycle a little, it may not be adjusted to the light and be burning.

Remember, for plants light + nutrients = growth. You might be providing to much light and to little nutrients. If your equation is off you'll have unhealthy plants.
