Hi all! My refugium starter kit from Algae Barn came in last week and after setting it up my chaeto began to bleach. I'm using a Kessil H380 to light the fuge and initially the chaeto sat at about the water line because of the marine pure blocks underneath it. There was about 12 inches give or take between the water line and the light. I've since removed a layer of marine pure blocks and only have them sitting on the floor of the refugium. The chaeto is now 14-15 inches under the light. I was also running the light on a reverse cycle from my DT. What should I do with the bleached parts of the chaeto? Should I decrease the amount of time the H380 is on? Any help is much appreciated. This is my first reef tank and first time setting up a fuge. Chaeto is always out of stock these days so I'm trying to preserve what is left. Thank you very much!

What should I do with the bleached parts of the chaeto?
Rinse it off or shake it off. It is dead stuff. You dont want that floating around to clog your pump or something.
Should I decrease the amount of time the H380 is on?
Yes. It will need to adapt to your tank. It might not have been in that much light. It will also react to different nutrient levels than what it was grown in. Like all things it goes thru some transplant shock.

That is a strong refugium light, maybe too much par too quick..I believe the dead chaeto can release nutrients back into the water, so I would cut off the dead pieces and remove, and lessen the intensity of your light to acclimate the chaeto.

I just finished removing the bleached chaeto and i'm now left with something smaller than a golf ball...

What's a good starting point in terms of duration of time that I should leave the fuge light on? My phosphates @ 0.037 ppm.
