I wanted to add a live filter to help lower my nitrate levels and I thought about adding caeto. But I can't add another light specific to it because I have no room. Could I take it out and put it in a small container full of the tank water and leave it outside to absorb the sun rays instead and put it back in at night?

I don't think that would work out for you. The photosynthesis that happens under light is what absorbs the nitrates...having that occur outside of the tank would not help your cause.

Upload a pic of your tank setup and we'll try to come up with an alternate solution for you.

It isn't near any windows and in the back of the tank is filter floss. I don't mind the Caeto being in the front or back side of the tank. Thank you for your advice!

There are magnetic lights that are designed for all in one tanks like that so you can utilize the back chamber as a refugium. You might have to move the tank forward a bit (away from the wall) to fit it though. You could also use a different macro algae like Red Ogo and have it in your display :)
