If I put chaeto in a small isolation tank in my 35g aio and just let it sit there, would there be any benefit?

maybe just use a small powerhead to make water pass through it.
Certainly helps with absorbing nutrients

I wouldn't recommend it. I put chaeto in a breeder net hanging from the side of my tank. It was unsightly but did seem to lower my nutrients. It was definetly growing. The problem it caused was that it grew through the net, broke off and now I have chaeto all over my display, and I do mean all over.
