What about this light is it any good?

So reading the reviews and specs of this light, it doesn’t look great. Supposedly, despite claiming that each strip is 10 watts, they are actually only 3.25 watts at the highest setting. I’m sure they’ll grow some chaeto, but if you want a really productive refugium, I would go with something else. The Tunze light mentioned above is good, but pretty expensive. I know a lot of people here use the ACKE light I’m using and I haven’t see anyone having any issues with it, most of the reviews on Amazon are from people using it for a fuge light.

I get it, especially if you already have one lying around. I would recommend partially obstructing the intake so that you’re you’re not getting the full flow. Even on the lowest setting its way too much (especially if you’re trying to grow pods for a dragonet).

I find it necessary to add ammonia and ChaetoGrow to keep up with nutrient demand of macro algae. It’s a lot cleaner than excess food.

Just wondering, why add ammonia, instead of nitrate ? I know ammonia will become nitrite and then nitrate.

The one you listed is similar to the tunze. The tunze is submersible, but doesn’t have to be. Are going to run it without the lid? The plastic of the aqua clear is pretty opaque, I would think you’d either have to go topless, find a clear piece of plastic/glass to use for a lid, or get a submersible light.

Most macro prefer ammonia uptake to nitrate. Also coral only use ammonia that are produced by nitrogen fixation bacteria located in coral biomass. Advanced reefers know that their SPS require phosphate but don’t need nitrate from bulk water. Why? Because Cynobacteria convert dissolved N2 into ammonia for direct assimilation into coral biomass.

PS: It’s very cheap. I don’t recommend for novices. I have been dosing Austin clear ammonia for > 20yrs.

If you want simple and amazing growth just grab a clamp light from lowes and a 5,000 k -6,500 k cfl (spiral bulb) total cost $30 max but probably cheaper

I use the Santa Monica GEM5 (a single unit). It's submersible (or not) and just attach it to a smart plug to run opposite the main tank in my AIO fuge in the back.

These par 38 led bulbs are 15W 6500K at <$5 each. Dampproof connector is $4 both available at Lowes. For $50 this 20G tank is plenty bright growing Red Ogo for personal consumption.. I use one unit to grow phytoplankton.
