I have one strain of Chaeto that's a very thick variation almost like ramen noodles.

I have another Chaeto that is closer to fishing twine thickness but I'm considering taking it out to allow for the ramen noodle strain to have more success.

Is there a difference in phosphate reduction or a preferred strain of Chaeto? Is it a bad idea to have both strains in my system?

C. crassa (thick) and C. linum (thin) tend to be the common strains in the hobby. I think they may also "change thickness" depending on flow, but I could be mistaken here. Both will work well for phosphate reduction and I don't really think there is a preferred strain. There is no issue with having both strains in your tank.
