Chaeto - When To Add

Sorry to revive this, but to be clear, you can still end up with a hair algae infestation or another one...right? Or will chaeto nutrient uptake typically be enough to prevent something like this?

It is still possible. Lots of variables come into play. I feel the goal is to get the chaeto to uptake enough nutrients so that your CuC can handle the algae that does grow in the display.

I gotcha. That makes sense. I'm getting a juvenile foxface soon, so I'm not worried too much about this but I will be if it becomes uncontrollable. I've heard they can mow their own weight.

I added Chaeto on day one and started the refugium light cycle that night.
Fed the tank a cube of mysis every day and kept the lights off the first week.
Started out with dry rock and live sand.

Another good question is when do you remove it, I felt that was stripping my water too clean, 120lb of LR, skimmer, 3-4” sandbed plus the cheato was too much for my 75g

I like to wait until I see some steady nutrients . I started chaeto early with a recent cycle . All I got was a ton of HA growth in the fuge. until I had to dose just a little bit.
The chaeto took over .
