Chaeto works to well?

About a week ago I added chaeto to my sump to help with pods and I wanted the chaeto to out compete any algae that could possibly grow in the display tank.

I have noticed since I added it, it has consumed all my nitrates. I try to keep them are 5ppm but today I measured and they were at 0. I mainly have spa frags and with the chaeto consuming it, could it turn into an issue or does the chaeto keep it in balance some how?
101 PERCENT IT HELP.. ^_^ TO MAINTAIN UR NO3 AND PO4 LOW.....

Hi,
same overhere, Nitrate completely zero, phosphate almost the same 0.01 to 0.02
I just reduced the light time to 6 hours and keep CaNO3 as source to raise the nitrate if the corals need it.

When you buy Cheato, it is frequently nitrate deficient and will suck up a ton of nitrate right away. This is what plants do. After it gets its stored levels up, it will not consume nearly as much nitrate. Bottom line, if you want nitrates now you need to dose.

For light, get a daylight LED spotlight. 90-120W equivalent LED bulb. Unless your bulb is 8+ inches above your water, stick with the 90W. But get daylight! don't get soft white, etc. Some people have suggested macros need more red light. This is not true. I tried that and the macro slowly deteriorated. Daylight spectrum makes my macro grow well.

That is great, I put some in my 400lt and it has not helped at all,I have tried everything to get my nitrates down, any ideas

I don't know what light you use but try a better light on the chaeto.

Smells... "Fishy"... I highly doubt chaeto alone is responsible for absorbing those nutrients that fast.
Its very likely that the chaeto is causing the rapid drop in nutrients it is very efficient at removing nutrients especially with the right lighting and flow..

Are you still using the chaeto and have you been dosing nitrates? I am using a Kessil grow light and fight too low of nutrients with it and then if I dose nitrates then I get either a crazy brown algae or cyanobacteria everywhere. Trying to find a balance and not starve the acros.

I am thinking about increasing my feedings, watching my PO4 levels and using GFO as needed and reducing my refugium down to around 5 hours/night.

People say to shoot for 5 ppm nitrates but whenever I do they tank just looks like crap even increasing it over a few weeks.
