This maybe a dumb question but I'm going to ask. Can Chaeto carry crypto or marie velvet? I want to add chaeto to my system but i'm nervous about it becasue I don't to risk bringing crypto or velvet into my system.

It can, but it is unlikely if it is VERY well rinsed. The safest thing is to leave it in a fishless system for 16 days which will ensure it is safe.

+1 on rinsing it a few times to make sure it is very clean. I would also be worried about introducing bryopsis with chaeto (since that's how it got into my tank) or something similar so it's always going to be best practice to inspect and clean your chaeto before adding it to your refugium.

You can also order something like this: https://www.algaebarn.com/product/cleanchaeto/

A buddy of mine ordered some from Algae Barn and it was very clean and didn't even have any pods in it.

The pods usually found on macroalgae are more of a threat - the exoskeletons of these tiny crustaceans could theoretically host the tomont stage of marine parasites. However, a coral dip will kill any pods while leaving the macroalgae intact. But do rinse it thoroughly afterwards to avoid getting any coral dip in your tank.

Interesting. I thought the tomont would only encrust on hard surfaces?

Pods are crustaceans and like shrimps/crabs have an exoskeleton. An exoskeleton is hard and it has been proven that tomonts can encyst upon it.
