Chalice, Do NOT Grow List...who has em'

I don't wanna argue about prices. It is what it is. There will always be expensive corals and inexpensive corals. It's up to each hobbyist to choose which to buy.

I think that's a good summation.

BTW, is anyone else as confused as I am.... I thought this thread was about which chalices don't grow well.... :confuse:

Wow SD, thats a nice chalice in your avatar also. What is that called?
Looks like an ice mountain on Mars.

These threads always turn out like this. Nothing to be confused about.

LOL, that's a great description! But no, it has no name.

Not sure if its ever been discussed on here before, but what is everyones take on UN-proven chalices that just DO NOT GROW?

It seems that the chalice craze has really taken off lately. Some of us who have been collecting for awhile have seen many morphs come and go. Some that do really well ie. BGM, Miami Hurricane, OME, Various WM etc.

Lately though people have been buying up chalices and chopping little frags and selling them for high $$$ amounts before the chalice ever earns a track record. They are brought in from trans shipments, put under actinics, photographed, chopped, and sold for 20x what they are purchased for. Does anyone else have a problem with this? I understand that you can't stop it all together, and people will still try to take advantage of people not in the know. I have a couple myself that I thought were amazing looking, and figured screw it, I'll take a chance, maybe it will grow well, NOT!

So whats your opinion?

IMO chalices like most corals need to be properly healed once fragged. Once a coral is stressed one of the worst things you can do is change the environment it was originally acclimated to (pre-fragging). Also you can get them to grow but they need the proper [Ca/Mg/Alk] and more importantly keeping consistent [Ca/Mg/Alk]. Another key is not moving them around in your tank when you introduce them. Shifting corals around, sand on them from gobies etc. seems to stress them considerably. Hope I could help... Also a dip in Lugols couldnt hurt incase the tissue is getting burned by the O2 produced by the zoanthellae. Sometimes this happens when LPS are introduced to intense light after being stressed. Hope I can help

Would you guys like me to clean up this thread?

Seriously, would you delete posts on this thread?

I thought Moderation was used only if profanity, threats, rascism or the like was used, not a thread simply getting a bit off topic in a friendly manner.

Dave, I think he was asking to be polite if the original poster would like some of the off topic remarks to be deleted so people could follow it and answer the original question. The mods here do not rule with an iron fist, they let a lot go that you could not get by with in a lot of other forums. Even when there are arguments they usually let it go until it starts to get out of hand and then they will step in.

They all grow too slow but that is part of the challenge of this hobby that keeps me so interested.

yes he was being polite. We all know if this was RC. they would have sent everyone to the electric chair. Thats why I enjoy this forum so much more. as long as things don't get out of hands.

Its funny how that works.
Same with the prices. If the prices weren't high and the most colorful ones were abundant - NO ONE WOULD WANT THEM. Its how it works. Soon you won't be able to sell zoo's for more than $20 a frag/mini-colony because everyone has them and they literally grow like weeks. Its the cyclical nature of things.
A lot of the people made about the price - including me sometimes - is because I want a piece and don't have the funds or choose not to allocate x-amount of money for it.

The slowest grower/receder has to be Girl-X

I know I posted two chalices before but those are not the only ones I own. I do have also a bubble gum (no lineage) a tyree Lamellosa (just purchased a week ago ) i couldn't tell you the growth on it yet. (hope this thread is still around then) and lastly I have a cotton candy for the last six months. Dim. 1" across and 2" long and the only growth I saw was the sides got covered or grew over I should say. So is that good for six months?

you guys gotta be real experts. I never even heatd of girl-x. wait a minute is this an inside thing? sorry to inturupt. I thought it was a name of a chalice.

oops, closing door. leaving . ciao..

Girl-x

Note - this is when i first got it. It looks much better now. ;)

yea chalices grow slow thats why the hefty PR tag. Also the increasing price has to be attributed to the exponential amount of people joining the hobby daily!!! its crazy and it makes economic sense, If I were you all instead of complaining about the prices I would invest all your worthless stock market money and invest it in $500 colonies worth 5,000 the best return there is anymore in any market.

Yeah, I have to agree 100%. I notice a lot of my chalices that comes from Aussie seems to be very slower grower and loses its color. Won't die...but just does not hold up color well. Any secrets on that anyone. I have them in low light under 250 w xm 20k with 78-80 degree temp. Any suggestion?

experiment a bit...maybe give them higher light to see if that will get the colors to pop
