Chalice Help

Hello. I got this chalice from a coral show a few days ago. The vendor told me high light area is where these should be. I have this one up near the top but to me it doesn’t seem opened up. I have read mixed things on different posts. A lot of what I have seen says chalice like low light. Can someone shed some light on this for me. I am new to keeping corals and don’t want this to go downhill. I would like to move now if it needs to be moved.

Low light! Sand bed or near it.. well let me take that back… what light are you using? With any good light it needs to be lower.. also it won’t open during the day only at night you’ll see sweepers come out or the mouths open to feed.

I will preface by saying I am not an expert, and am very much still learning but I can, at least, lend you MY experience with a chalice.

i had one doing okay in qt. I moved it to a higher spot in my display when I moved it over and the very next day it was suffering. I don’t know the exact par but probably 250ish. I moved it to my sand bed as soon as I realized it was not doing well. That was a month ago. It is finally showing signs of coloring back up and a little growth. I lost a large portion of it but I feel now that it will keep going. I’ve attached a couple pics. One from qt when I first got it, one after it went in the display and went downhill quickly, and one from a few days ago.
They always say go slow with lighting, start low and move slowly towards higher par if needed.

i can tell you with my experience with chalice they love lower light in my tank and do extremely well there

Is this any better? I wouldn’t be surprised if I am wrong. It was my first drag swap and was hectic. It’s possible I heard wrong. There were so many other people talking and I looked at so many different frags. Lol

Yea, that looks like an acan. Acans do like lower light intensity, under a ledge where blue lighting is more dominant. They will do ok under high intensity but the coral tends to lose a lot of its coloring & only displays reds. The lower intensity brings out a variety of color, all depending on the type of acan you bought of course. I can say with confidence that the coral is not a chalice. Acans also enjoy being fed a couple of pieces of mysis or brine once in a while. They are a great coral to add in those darker areas where it’s difficult to add any other coral, filling in those dead spots with bright colors & building an acan garden will make your tank look amazing. Thanks everyone. So based on this photo am I assuming correctly that this coral doesn’t seem fully opened? Based on what I am hearing I should move to a lower light area of the tank?

It’s a acan not a chalice.. with that being said yes, it’s almost the same care either way.. lower light and low to med flow.. hope that helps.

All my chalice prefer low to moderate light and medium water flow but can say this does not look like a chalice
