+1 the green rim means watermelon. But only considered a grape watermelon if it has yellow in the eyes. They are green eyes so it is an alien eye. You can say watermelon alien eye because of the green rim. Not all alien eyes have a green rim.

It does seem you may have phosphate issues?

Phosphates and nitrates test undetectable on Api test kit. I just got them a couple
Months ago and they have been that way since. I've removed it physically and applied H202 on the algae itself but I can't get it to go away. The tank is just a little 10 gallon setup while I'm working on a new build. I've got purigen in a HOB filter keeping the nitrates at bay but I'm in the same boat as all of you that phosphates must be present. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated but please keep those terrible puns to yourself ;)

Other than water changes have you tried GFO? API are not the most accurate. That said it still may not be the issue of tests coming back low reading. The more algae will be consuming the phosphates causing the test to read low. Even with GFO it will take weeks before the algae start to die off. Until that time you may not notice a high reading with a test kit. The less algae in your tank to consume the phosphates the more will be able to show up in the test kit. When your phosphates lower the amount of algae will lower.

I have not tried gfo yet. Even with meticulous water changes the algae seems to thrive. How would I go about implementing gfo in such a small system? I have no plans to sump this tank since it is only temporary. Thanks

Also to give a better perspective, the picture shows the worst of the hair algae in the tank. It only grows on a few frag plugs.

The algae may only grow on certain plugs any because that is where it is rooted. If you were to pull some and let it land it will root there. In such a small tank a small media sock placed wherever water is moving. What type of filter are you using?

They are undetectable because they are being consumed by the hair algae and possibly other algae. Post a FTS of your nano for me.

Ive just got a little basic aqueon HOB with some purigen in it. Im looking into a phosban 150. Their website says its ok for HOB applications but I'm curious if there is a way to use an external pump because my tank is pretty full. Its holding all the frags from my 65 gallon setup I just broke down. Is there any way to effectively use GFO in another HOB filter or would it be better to go with a phosban reactor?
