Hi All,

Not sure if you can help, but I've had some chalices in my tank for quite awhile and wondered if someone could help ID them. If you happen to know their origin, that would be great too.

The pictures are not the best in the world, so my apologies. I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon to take up photography! :)

THANKS in advance for your help.

These I was told are Australian Chalices. Not sure about the ones above. The newly cut frags above are from these chalices (except the lil blue one).

You really cannot id most chalices solely based on pictures. If they were wild chalices they have no name unless you want to make up a name fore them. If you got them from someone as a cultured chalice you should ask the person you got them from if there was a name for the chalice.

Interesting. The ones in the bottom are wild (as far as I know) - I bought them as Australian. The first picture... no idea. I got them from some guy that was tearing down all of his tanks. I really liked them and many other things that I got from him.. except the aiptasia growing on his rubble and frag plugs. LOL

I have a question that I geuss relates to your thread :) Are names like "golden eye", "alien eye" and "watermelon" just generic names, which require a name in front of them to be individual coral specific (ie SDguy's alien eye)?

From what I have seen there is SOME generaly agreed upon criteria like;

chalices with a green rim and green or yellow eyes are watermelons

palys with a green mouth are people eaters

favites with a green septa are war corals

These are the only ones that I have seen with any consistancy, and of course sombody will chime in the exceptions to the rule, I am sure.
or even more criteria???

center chalice top pic, some kind of watermelon, and the red one with yellow eyes looks like the flamethrower.
