Hey everyone, here recently I started a chalice collection. I was comparing pics of when I get them and now and I noticed that some of them are starting to lose there brightness. Could this be from to much light or not enough? Or does any one have any other suggestions that might cause them to do this?

I would try moving the ones that are possibly bleaching to an area with less light and see how they respond. We have a handful of chalices and it is amazing how some want almost 80% shade and others to well in full 400W MH light.

i would move to a low light area in your tank and see how it responds i have had some chalices that i had to be kept under caves or they would bleach out and i have some that 6'' from the surface but in most cases chalice are low light corals.

None of them appear to be bleaching. They still have their color, their just not as bright as the were. That's why I was thinking they didn't have enough light. But I'm not sure tho

Any other tips or suggestions. Trying to make a list of different things to try that might be causing this

With chalices, I always error on the side of caution with lighting (ever since losing one to too much light because it was losing color).

Do you have any recent parameter readings?

Are the chalices in a low/med flow area? I would move them into the shade and see how they react.

IMO and through experience chalices show their best colors and steady growth when I meet these conditions: rock steady Alkalinity(if you have to test daily to get it right, then so be it you said you wanted bright chalices ), biweekly feelings of high quality zooplankton based foods(I have had good luck with Elos product which I believe is available through our sponsors), and good lighting with a definite er to a bluer spectrum(ie: 80/20 blue to white min. Or 20k+). In my experience shaded chalices will definitely lose their pop comparable to an acro browning out if that's something you are more familiar with. They need good lighting ime and if you want color and pop as well as overall healthy looking specimens then simply put they need to be in good health, which you will achieve through stable params and quality consistent feeding. It can take some work to get it right...but the results will speak for themselves and are quite rewarding if your into this kind of stuff. Hard work pays dividends as they say. Good luck and happy reefing bro!

Thank you all for the responses. Greatly appreciate it. I'm using two ai Vegas on a 95 gallon Surfline aquarium. I have my whites on 22% and blues range from 65 to 60 % reds and greens around 40 to 50%. The chalices are on the bottom of my ranks and a piece of shelf rock( which I thought would be consider lower lighting)My alk usually fluctuates between 8.5 to 9.5..not sure how steady you would say that is. I do bi weekly water changes of 20 gallons which yesterday I did my water change so tonight I will be testing water. I test water once a week and the last testing I did everything came out good. I do feed them throughout the week but I don't have a routine or anything. Just to give you guys an idea of how I doing it or help with aiding in suggestions. Thank you

I'm curious about the Alk comments as well.

What should be the target and why?

What kind of stress will it be on them to adjust your Alk to a target? And I imagine it takes a while to stabilize...

Hmm

There are many articles on the subject of reef tank chemistry and I won't delve into that for it would take a book or many books for that matter(all of which are great reads and will be beneficial to your tank, they are a great place to start when getting into the hobby). I will go as far as saying between 8.5 and 9.5 IS NOT stable. Stable would IMO be within a tenth of a point in either direction from a baseline number. What would be a good baseline number you ask? If your doing regular water changes to your tank(which WILL help with overall coloration and health) I would suggest your baseline alkalinity be at or very near the alkalinity figure for your water change source(whether you mix your own seawater or purchase it from your lfs etc.). IMO chalices can be just as finicky as sps when it comes to alk swings.

Thank you very much for your time and help.... I'm going to do a daily test of my all and see how much I lose each day so I can figure how much to dose to keep it more stable. With my lights only running at 22% whites would you consider this to be low or medium light? This way I know if I need to place them in a shadowed area

Only changes I would make on the lighting would be to lower the reds and greens down much further to around 15% and this should be done slowly over a week or so at which point I would start raising intensity of the blue channel to 70-80% Or when you find their happy spot. Remember stability is the key to MOST of this so making changes slowly is very important to understanding how each change you make is having an affect on your system/corals. Sounds like you'll figure it out, just monitor the changes and their outcomes and you soon have it dialed.

Glad I could help btw. I'll try to keep track of this thread and see how it goes but if you ever have any questions let me know. Throw some pics up here and you'll prob get more traffic on your thread, you might even get a comment from the rev himself! I plan to enter the nano in 90 soon with some spare parts laying around ill frag some of my chalices and throw them in you'll have to stop by my thread and check them out...that is...once I figure out how to post pics...:hat:

Sorry for the delay on responding I got caught up with work and family. I'm slowly working on adjusting everything accordingly to the advice I have been given on here. I'm working on slowly raising my blues and lowering my reds and greens. I've adjusted each by 3% and I figured I'd wait about a week and adjust them again. I've checked all my parameters ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates I'm gonna say about 2
Mag 1350
Cal 425
Alk 10
Phosphates were undetectable by with my tester
I'm using a Hannah Meter for my alk and the above reading were from yesterday. Today I checked it and it came down from 176 to 170 which I do believe is still in the range of 10 dkh so I'm not to sure on how much to dose accordingly with the readings I got

These are the pieces I'm having concerns about. A two of the pics I didn't take. These were pics provided to me from shrimplet when I bought the frags ( cb flaming Bugatti and cb rainbow crush) the other three are pics I took. On the atom bomb I lost the green in it and on the rainbow crush I lost the red on the right side of the pic. It's now all blue/green, but it still has the red line through the middle. I will try to get updated pics but it's going to be hard since I only have a iPhone camera. What are your thoughts on these pieces? And any ideas why I lost just the red on the rainbow crush?

IME! Chalices like low alk and high mag i keep my alk at a steady 7.8 and my mag at 1400. I would just put your chalices on the bottom outer edge of your tank so they don't get direct light!

your parameters are about the same as mine. i use Red Sea Coral Pro salt. i don't know what it could be. do you feed them? maybe add some amino acids? i use Red Sea Energy A & B a few times a week.

i would say if they're growing, that's a good thing though.
